Unfortunately, the circumstances surrounding Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader between Whiteville Post 137 and Morehead City are becoming less and less of a surprise. The doubleheader was scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. When umpires failed to show (reason unknown), calls were made to secure available officials. Once umpires arrived, Post 137 defeated Morehead 8-1. Game two was cancelled due to the late start.
Whiteville improves to 3-1 in Area II play. Morehead is winless and only brought nine players to Whiteville Saturday. It appears Post 137 lost an opportunity to pick up a “W” that would benefit its playoff hopes.
For those of us who grew up playing and following American Legion baseball, it is sad to see what has happened to what once was the best summer baseball league for high school age players in the country. With programs in Hamlet, Laurinburg, Brunswick County and others with a rich history ceasing to exist, I applaud the individuals who continue to work to keep Whiteville Post 137 baseball alive.
