Rain is the winner in Thursday baseball

Posted 7.13.18

Both Whiteville Post 137 and Wolfpack Optimist AAA teams’ games were suspended due to rain Thursday evening.

Jacksonville Post 265 scored a run in the top the fourth to tie its game with Whiteville at one-all before heavier rains stopped play. The game will resume today in Jacksonville at 5:30 p.m. Game two of the best-of-three series will follow. If a third game is necessary, it will be in Whiteville at 7 p.m. Saturday. In other Area II first-round action, neither of the scheduled games between Hope Mills and Wallace or Pleasure Island and Port City were played. However, Wallace received a win by forfeit as Hope Mills could not field a team due to a car accident traveling to the game. The accident kept three players from reaching the game, but did not result in serious injuries to the players. Pleasure Island/Port City was postponed due to rain. Both series resume Friday.

Wolfpack Optimist may have gotten a break with the suspension of play during the second inning  of its contest. Leland had jumped out to a 9-1 lead prior to play being stopped. The game will resume at 5 p.m. today. Leland is the only undefeated team remaining in the NC DYB AAA State tournament. The elimination game between West Robeson American and South Park White was also suspended and will resume at 5 p.m. today. South Park led 3-2 when play was stopped.
