Results mixed for Columbus teams in TRC openers

The West Columbus and Whiteville boys were victorious Friday evening, while the West Columbus girls were the only Columbus County team to manage a win in opening night Three Rivers Conference basketball play.

West Columbus swept South Robeson. The boys won 76-61 behind another double-double by Jake Brownlee. Brown lee scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Zach McPherson contributed 16 points and Dejour Smith added 12 points for the Vikings.

The West Columbus girls defeated South Robeson 41-34.

Whiteville boys opened their season with a 71-59 win over East Bladen. An 18-7, second quarter advantage gave the Wolfpack a 32-19 halftime lead and the Wolfpack maintained that cushion throughout most of the second half. Four Whiteville players scored in double figures led by Ty Moss with 15 points. Cameron Richardson and Phillip Powell scored 13 points each and Tyjuan Anderson added 10.

Whiteville’s girls jumped out to a 19-12 lead after one quarter, but were unable to hang on to the lead as East Bladen came back to take a 57-44 win. The Eagles outscored the Wolfpack 34-13 in the second and third period. Nsaia Rogers led Whiteville with 17 points.

A 20-6 St. Pauls second quarter advantage provided a 31-14 halftime lead and the Bulldogs continued to pull away to a 60-34 win over East Columbus.

St. Pauls took a 46-41 win in the girls contest.

Home-standing South Columbus hung tough with Red Springs but eventually succumbed 45-41 in the boys contest. Red Springs girls limited South columbus to single-digit scoring in every period in earning a 39-20 win.
