SC Angels suffer first loss, EC Darlings eliminated

Duplin County handed the South Columbus Angels its first loss in X-Play state tournament action, 6-5 in six innings. The Duplin win left three teams with one loss and an equal number of games played. Cape Fear drew the bye, so Duplin and South Columbus will meet again at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) with the winner taking on Cape Fear for the state title and a berth in the Angels X-play World Series to be held in Sumter , SC.

The East Columbus Darlings ran into a red-hot Hope Mills team and fell by a 13-0 score to end its tournament run. East Columbus lost its opening round game , but reeled off three consecutive wins to reach the final four in the 12-team tournament.

East Columbus Darlings team members are Sara Coleman, Camryn Kemp, Karly Paul, Myleigh Moore, Kamora Bryant, Milana Graham, MacKenzie Clemmons, Alexis Freeman, Jenna King, Gracie Coyle, Malia Graham, and Meela Roberts. The coaches are John King, Crystal Coyle, Sandra Daniels and Meki Graham.

Monday, Tuesday morning action

South Columbus Angels continued to dominate the opposition in the Angels X-play state tournament in Beulaville. In Monday’s winner’s bracket game South handed Cape Fear a 9-1 defeat. South Columbus has outscored the opposition 34-2 in three games. South Columbus played Duplin County at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Dublin, Cape Fear and Cherryville are the remaining teams with one loss.

The East Columbus Darlings continue to light up the scoreboard, defeating Burgaw 17-9 Monday. Tuesday morning,  East Columbus pulled off a miraculous comeback win over West Chatham. Down 16-13 with two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the fifth and final frame, East scored four times to pull out a 17-16 win. East Columbus played undefeated Hope Mills at 5 p.m this (Tuesday) afternoon.

It was “oh so close” to an East Columbus versus South Columbus contest Tuesday morning. South Columbus had the winning run on base in the bottom of the fifth inning against West Chatham, but could not score, leaving the game tied at five each. West Chatham scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-5 win and eliminate South from further play.

South Columbus Darling team members are  Sarah Reaves, Baylee Brinson, Lacey Worley, Mya Johnson, DaShyia Graham, Ciara Hewett, Taylor Duncan, Brianna Price, Lakyn Grice, Malaysia Martinez, Chloe Cribb and Harley Hinson. Coaches are Josh Grice, Brent Brinson, Jeremy Hewett and Michelle Hewett.
