There is a dynasty in southern Columbus County. The dynasty is not widely known, but the program is dominate nevertheless. The South Columbus Angels earned its third consecutive North Carolina Dixie Softball Angels X-Play state title.
After breezing through the first three rounds, South Columbus stumbled, falling to Duplin County 6-5 Tuesday. To add insult to injury Cape Fear won the draw that determined the team receiving the bye since South Columbus, Cape Fear and Duplin County all had one loss and an equal number of games played.
Not to worry! In a Wednesday afternoon rematch, South Columbus defeated Duplin County 8-1. After a short respite, South Columbus defeated Cape Fear 8-2 to claim the title and another World Series berth.
The 2015 South Columbus Angels remained in-state for World Series play at Carthage. In 2016, the Angels traveled to Alexandria, Louisiana. The 2017 South team should have good support as the World Series will take place in Sumter, SC, less than a two-hour drive.
