The Columbus Cup is awarded to the Columbus County high school accumulating the most points earned by victories against the remaining three public high schools in Columbus County. A point system is also in place to reward/penalize teams for ejections or a lack of. Whiteville High School has claimed the Columbus Cup since its inception in the 2013-14 school year.

South Columbus has been Whiteville’s primary competition. In 2016-17, the Cup winner was decided by the results of the final junior varsity and varsity softball/baseball doubleheaders at season’s end. Whiteville won both varsity contests and one JV game to overtake the Stallions. Last year, a West Columbus Boys Tennis sweep of East Columbus helped the Gators overcome the Vikings in the final weeks in the competition between the 1A schools.

It isn’t unusual for South Columbus to lead the standings at the end of the fall sports schedule. The Stallions typically do well in football, girls tennis, and volleyball, all played in the fall. That is true again this year. This fall, the SCHS Boys Soccer squad played on even terms with Whiteville earning five wins against county opposition. This has given South Columbus its largest lead heading into winter sports since the competition opened.

South Columbus swept its county opponents in junior varsity and varsity volleyball, girls tennis and football to help it obtain 111 points. Whiteville is second with 93 points. East Columbus is currently third and leads West Columbus by 24 points in the battle for supremacy between the 1A schools.

Winter sports points are earned in Girls and Boys JV and Varsity basketball. Points also are awarded in the high school bowling league based on season-ending tournament finishes.
