Coach Shellie Britt’s West Columbus Girls Tennis team completed its regular season schedule with a 9-0 win over South Robeson. The win upped the Vikings’ record to 9-9. West Columbus and Whiteville were the only two Three Rivers squads to play all 18 conference matches. West Columbus will receive a first round bye October 17 in the 1A East Girls Tennis playoffs. The Vikings second round opponent October 23 will be the winner of the Raleigh Charter versus Louisburg match.

East Columbus, carrying a 6-9 record and the second best finish among 1A teams in the Three Rivers is a contender for one of the two wildcard slots in the 1A East pre-determined bracket. Edenton-Holmes or Lejuene would be likely first round destinations for the Gators if they qualify.

The 1A singles and doubles tournament scheduled for Wednesday at West Columbus was rescheduled for Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. Only the players winning the 1A singles and doubles qualify for the East Regional. The 2A singles and doubles was scheduled to begin today (Wednesday) at East Bladen and finish Thursday. The TRC receives four singles and four doubles slots in the Mid-East Regional.

VOLLEYBALL

South Columbus doused the fire know as South Robeson Volleyball Tuesday. The Mustangs had won six consecutive matches before rumbling with the Stallions. South won in straight sets 25-16, 25-17 and 25-16.

Whiteville rebounded from its first loss Monday to sweep West Columbus. Set scores were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-14.  Claire Smith had 19 digs and three aces for Whiteville. Marquasia Smith led Whiteville with five kills. Olivia Smith added four kills and two blocks. Hannah Hewett dished out a dozen assists, while Charlotte Herring contributed seven.

East Columbus put more distance between itself and South Robeson with a 3-0 win over East Bladen. West Bladen topped St. Pauls 3-1. Fairmont shut out Red Springs 3-0.

Even with the extension of the reporting deadline and waiving the four match per week maximum ( five per week is now allowed) several schools are going to be hard pressed to play a complete schedule (18 matches) with postponements of Thursday matches. Here are the new dates set by the NCHSAA.
