West Columbus gets early leads but can’t hold on in 1A finals

West Columbus led early in both its games with Murphy in the 1-A championship series, but ultimately fell two games to none.

The Vikings lost 7-5 in game 1 and almost held off Murphy in game 2, leading 4-3 after six innings, but the Bulldogs exploded for five in the top of the seventh. It was too much for West Columbus to overcome, resulting in an 8-5 final.

West bolted to a 3-0 lead in game 1, played in Burlington, then led 5-2 before Murphy jumped on top 7-5 in the fourth just before another rain delay.

West Columbus was to play Friday, but rains delayed earlier games, which would have pushed the Viking start well into the night and caused a likely post-midnight finish.

Game 1 ended with the same score from the rain delay, 7-5.

Later Saturday, West Columbus put two runs on the board in the first and led 2-1 after two innings. Murphy pulled ahead 3-2 after three innings. West rallied to go ahead 4-3 after six but Murphy posted five runs in the top of the seventh. West added one more for the 8-5 Murphy win.

Check back with Sunday morning for more complete reports.

West Columbus fans brought a lot of enthusiasm to the games and had a lot to cheer about, but ultimately, a strong Murphy team rallied in both games to prevail 2-0.
