Allen Iverson often repeated quote, “We’re sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we’re talking about practice.” couldn’t be farther from the truth for Whiteville Post 137’s American Legion baseball squad. If it isn’t raining, Post 137 is playing. The Jeff Lamb coached squad is either playing a tightly-bunched regular season schedule or making up games from previous rainouts.
Throw in this past weekend’s four games in three days in the Palmetto Invitational and as Post 137 player Gage Hammonds stated, “You can’t have any more fun playing baseball than this.” It doesn’t hurt that Whiteville is 10-4 overall after three wins this weekend. Post 137 is also vying for the top spot in Area II heading into the final week of regular season play with a 5-1 mark.
Whiteville took wins over Beverly-Lowell OH (9-0) Friday, Horry County, SC (3-1) Saturday and Frederick, MD (9-5) Sunday. Post 137 fell to undefeated Garner, NC 7-0 in its second game Friday.
Scott Bowen, Zac Hunt, Daniel Carter, Brooks Baldwin, A.J. Brooks, Jeremiah Locklear and Jerry Locklear have provided Post 137 with solid mound performances. Dylan Lawson’s return to the bump Sunday should only enhance Post 137’s playoff chances.
Baldwin, Brooks, Gage Hammonds, Dawson Elliott, Will Hinson, Owen McDowell, Noah Evington have been offensive leaders. Jake Butler has provided solid play behind the plate.
Whiteville faces a difficult final week with seven games in seven days, including a season-ending double header with a stout Wilmington Post 10 team. According to Gage Hammonds, nothing could be more fun!
