Brooks Baldwin continued a stellar string of spring pitching performances, allowing just two hits in Whiteville Post 137’s 3-1 win over the Hope Mills Boosters at Whiteville’s Legion Stadium. The win offsets a 3-1 Booster win over Whiteville on June 3. Post 137 is now 5-1 in Area II play while Hope Mills drops to 7-3.
Scott Bowen walked to lead off the Post 137 third. He stole second and third base. After a shallow fly out to left field, A.J. Brooks’ ground out to second base scored Bowen with the game’s first run.
Will Hinson and Owen McDowell singled to start the home half of the fourth. Jake Butler’s sac bunt moved the runners to second and third. Bowen’s hit to left field scored Hinson, but McDowell was called out on a play at the plate.
Hope Mills cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth. A lead off walk, stolen base, single and fielder’s choice plated the Boosters lone score of the evening.
McDowell doubled to lead off the Whiteville sixth, moving to third when the Hope Mills center fielder misplayed the ball. He scored later in the frame on a wild pitch.
Other than one Hope Mills runner who scored, Baldwin allowed only one other Booster runner to reach third base. He struck out seven and walked two. Baldwin used just 89 pitches to go the distance. A key play took place in the top of the first when Baldwin picked off Hope Mills’ Bladen Strickland from third base for the final out of the inning.
