Wolfpack Optimist AAA lose close one, win big

Wolfpack Optimist was one out away from a DYB AAA state tourney opening round win over Lumberton when a two-out double plated two runs and turned Whiteville’s 5-4 lead into a 6-5 deficit. Wolfpack Optimist was retired in order in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win for Lumberton.

First game jitters figured into a Lumberton three-run first. Three walks, two errors and a hit batter gave Lumberton a 3-0 lead after one-half inning. The Optimist received a one-run present from Lumberton in the bottom of the frame as a walk and error made the score 3-1. Lumberton increased the lead to 4-1 with a run in the third.

Base hits by Kolbe Little, Quinton Hayes-Lennon, Parker Bass and Hunter Hagood sparked a four-run rally as Optimist took a 5-4 lead in the fourth frame. The lead stood until the fateful sixth. After one out, a walk, single and walk loaded the bases. After a strikeout, a double scored two runs to give Lumberton the lead and ultimately the win.

Wolfpack Optimist bounced back with a vengeance on Sunday. Walker Sullivan and Kolbe Little combined to pitch a no-hitter in Whiteville’s 12-2 five inning win. Sullivan and Little combined to strikeout four while walking five.

Quinton Hayes-Lennon blasted a two-run homer to highlight a four-run Wolfpack Optimist first frame. Optimist added single runs in the third and fourth before scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.

Dawson Spivey had two hits for Whiteville. Will Fisher and John Lucas Newell drove in two runs each. Walker Sullivan, Parker Bass and Davis Strickland also had hits for Wolfpack Optimist. Kolbe Little collected a hit and scored three runs.

Wolfpack Optimist play Reidsville, Monday at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination contest.
