Big wins and close losses defined the Wolfpack Optimist time in the Dixie Youth baseball AAA state tournament in Dunn. Wolfpack Optimist finished play with a record of 2-2. Optimist outscored the opposition 27-9 in its two wins and were outscored 10-7 in its two losses.
Monday, Wolfpack Optimist jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two and one-half innings and coasted to a 15-7 win over Reidsville. Josh Harrison drove in four runs for Whiteville. Kolbe Little had three hits and two RBIs. Walker Sullivan contributed a single, double and two runs batted in. Dawson Spivey doubled, with Will Fisher, Hunter Hagood and Corey Faison collecting singles. Davis Strickland stole two bases and scored twice. Spivey, Little, Harrison, Fisher and Parker Bass all pitched for Wolfpack Optimist.
With the mid-afternoon Monday win, Wolfpack Optimist played West Robeson Monday night. Wolfpack Optimist stranded eight runners in the first five innings, but were still locked in a scoreless battle with West Robeson. West Robeson pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Optimist battled back using three walks and two singles to pull within 4-2, but could not complete the comeback.
Quinton Hayes-Lennon led Wolfpack Optimist with a hit and two walks. Will Fisher, Walker Sullivan, Dawson Spivey and Josh Hagood also had hits. Sullivan, Kolbe Little and Fisher pitched for Whiteville. They allowed three hits, struck out four, walked three and gave up one earned run.
