In Saturday’s opening round of the NCDYB AA (Coach-Pitch) tourney in Stanley, the Wolfpack Optimist were down by just three runs, 5-2 after five innings. The host Stanley squad scored 12 runs in the sixth inning and steamed to a 17-3 victory. Optimist coach JoJo Merritt considered Stanley one of the pre-tournament favorites after watching Friday’s “around-the-horn” competition. Stanley defeated Leland 5-4 later Saturday.

Stanley out hit Wolfpack Optimist 24 to 8, 11 of those hits coming in the sixth inning. Ty Lae Rose connected on two hits for Wolfpack Optimist.

Wolfpack Optimist bounced back with a 12-0 victory over West Lincoln Sunday afternoon. Optimist plated three runs in the first, six in the third and three in the fourth to secure the “run rule” victory.

McKenzie Spivey and Jayston Hunt had three hits each. Spivey’s hits included a triple. She also scored three runs and drove in two more. Hunt had a double as one of his hits. Sidney Miller drove in three runs with two doubles and scored thrice. Briley Tedder and Luke Merritt collected two hits and two RBIs apiece. Zavion Ward tripled and Paxton Bass doubled.

Wolfpack Optimist faced Richlands in a second elimination game Sunday evening. Briley Tedder homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs to lead Optimist to a 14-5 win. McKenzie Spivey, Luke McLean, Sidney Miller and Jackson Stevens contributed two hits each.

Despite Sunday’s two impressive wins, Wolfpack Optimist coach JoJo Merritt believes his team still has more to give. Merritt says, “Our play must continue to improve to compete with the teams who remain in the tournament.” Wolfpack Optimist will play South Park Monday at 4 p.m. With a win, Optimist would play again Monday at 7 p.m. versus West Chatham.
