Start of U.S. 701 overhaul could be delayed up to a year

The $25 million project will widen U.S. 701 from south of Pleasant Plains Church Road to north of U.S. 74-76 and convert the bypass into a “super street” with a full median, limited access and lighted turns. Staff photo by Justin Smith

The start of a major overhaul of U.S. 701 in Whiteville could be pushed back as long as a year because of delays in obtaining right of ways needed to relocate utilities and funding constraints, according to Ken Clark, district engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation.
